In-App ordering accounts of 9% of Starbucks transactions

"Starbucks, the coffee chain with 27,000 stores in 75 countries, continues to ramp up mobile technology as a key part of its strategy to handle customer orders, payments and loyalty programs. The company plans to test a guest checkout feature for first-time users of its mobile application early in 2018, Matt Ryan, global chief strategy officer, said last week in a call with investors.
Payments made with a mobile device increased to 30% of transactions in the U.S. stores in fiscal Q3 2017, compared with 29% in the previous three-month period. The chain’s mobile order and pay feature that lets customers order with the Starbucks app and skip the line generated 9% of transactions. That’s nearly double the 5% from a year earlier.
While Starbucks’ mobile app has led to overwhelming foot traffic at some cafes, the company has added digital order managers to 1,000 stores to improve the ability to serve customers who order and pay through their phones."

Over half of UK online sales come through tablets or mobiles

"A major digital tipping point has been reached – with the percentage of UK online retail sales made through mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) exceeding 50% for the first time in Q4 2015/16*.
Smartphones and tablets accounted for 51% of UK online retail sales in Q4, which was a substantial increase on the 45% recorded in Q3 – and up from 40% in Q4 last year.
The percentage split of total UK online sales between the types of channel for Q4 2015/16 was as follows:
Desktop / laptop – 49%
Tablets - 33%
Smartphones - 18%
Visits to retail websites via mobile devices accounted for two-thirds (66%) of traffic in Q4, up from 63% in the previous quarter. This compares with 53% in Q4 last year.
This leap in mobile penetration appears to be being driven by increased confidence in using smartphones for online shopping. Sales growth through these devices rose sharply in 2015, while growth through tablets reached a record low in December 2015."

Mobile accounts for 42% of purchases by value on Alibaba in China

"Major e-commerce players are quickly joining the revolution, particularly in emerging markets where lower penetration of PCs and fixed-line broadband has led many consumers to skip desktop shopping and leap straight to mobile commerce. In April, India’s leading online retailer, Flipkart, signaled its intention to shut down its conventional desktop-oriented site and concentrate solely on mobile sales within a year, having seen mobile traffic increase tenfold in 18 months.
Meanwhle in China, the country’s largest e-commerce company, Alibaba Group, is also moving quickly as shoppers shift to smartphones. Mobile purchases made up 42 percent of gross merchandise volume (GMV) on Alibaba’s China shopping platforms in the company’s fiscal third quarter ended Dec. 31—that's up from just 20 percent in the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2013.
Alibaba’s online marketplaces host millions of large and small merchants, so it's challenge is helping retailers serve the rapidly expanding ranks of mobile shoppers. "More than 139.5 million Europeans now shop via mobile phone on a regular basis, with 42 per cent saying that they buy 'on impulse' compared to 25 per cent of non-mobile shoppers.
The study from ING looked at the shopping, lifestyle and saving habits of mobile bankers. It involved over 12,403 people using internet-based polling across Europe, with 990 respondents coming from the UK specifically.
Looking at what they are spending on, 23 per cent of items purchased on mobile were clothes, followed by electronics (21 per cent), games (12 per cent), holidays (11 per cent), music (11 per cent) and groceries (11 per cent).
Examining the rise of alternative payment methods, ING found that nearly half (49 per cent) of Europeans use physical cash less often than they did 12 months ago and 40 per cent claim they rarely use it.
A further 45 per cent of consumers predicted that they will use less cash in the next 12 months.

Britons spent £4.9 billion online using mobiles & tablets in 2013

"In 2013 alone, eager British spenders also accounted for a £4.9 billion spend online using mobile devices – over ten per cent of Europe’s total splurge online of £38.8 billion that year.
However, Britain was topped globally by the US, who had the most people purchasing items using mobile devices. Shoppers in France and Italy, in contrast, are the least likely to visit retail stores on their mobile devices.
Computers still currently remain the most popular choice for browsing online, accounting for 85 per cent of last year’s web activity in the UK and seven other EU countries analysed during the research.
Still, mobile shopping in Europe is forecasted to increase by 85 per cent over the next year – demonstrating that people may soon start using computers to browse the web less and less.
Giulio Montemango, Senior VP of International at RetailMeNot Inc, who commissioned the study, said: “As smart phones and tablets have become increasingly sophisticated, more consumers are using mobile devices to shop.”
“The study shows that mobile is now the key driver behind the growth of e-commerce. To take advantage of this shift, retailers must adapt by optimising their websites to mobile devices and ensuring payments are secure.”"
