50m tweets are posted every day

"Folks were tweeting 5,000 times a day in 2007. By 2008, that number was 300,000, and by 2009 it had grown to 2.5 million per day. Tweets grew 1,400% last year to 35 million per day. Today, we are seeing 50 million tweets per day—that's an average of 600 tweets per second. (Yes, we have TPS reports.)
Tweet deliveries are a much higher number because once created, tweets must be delivered to multiple followers. Then there's search and so many other ways to measure and understand growth across this information network. Tweets per day is just one number to think about. We'll make time to share more information so please stay tuned."

Publisher Hachette made approximately 5% of its US revenues from eBooks in 2009

"In the United States, which posted double-digit growth to end September, sales fell by about 20% in the final quarter. During 2008, the Stephenie Meyer saga (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn) was a huge success, selling over 28 million copies, including 8 million in December alone. Consequently, the drop in Stephenie Meyer sales depressed revenue growth in the final part of 2009, with the impact only partly cushioned by the success of books by Edward Kennedy (True Compass), Uwem Akpan (Say You're One of Them) and Malcolm Gladwell (Outliers and What the Dog Saw). U.S. sales of e-books increased sharply during the year, reaching around 5% of total revenues in December."

An average American Facebook user spends 7 hours a month on the site

"The average U.S. Internet user spends more time on Facebook than on Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Microsoft, Wikipedia, and Amazon combined. Think about that for a moment.
New numbers released by Nielsen today confirm what we’ve known for a while: Facebook is the web’s #1 time sink. What’s more interesting though is just how much more time we spend on the world’s largest social network today than we did 6 months ago.
Back in June 2009, Nielsen estimated that the average U.S. user spent 4 hours and 39 minutes on Facebook per month. That’s about 9.3 minutes per day in a 30 day month. In August, that number rose to 5 hours and 46 minutes, or 11.5 minutes per day.
In January 2010 though, the amount of time the average person spent on Facebook jumped to over 7 hours. Each American Facebook user spent an average of 421 minutes on Facebook per month, which amounts to over 14 minutes per day. Even if you lump together the time spent on Google (1:23), Yahoo (2:09), YouTube (1:02), Microsoft/Bing (1:35) Wikipedia (0:15), and Amazon (0:22), it still doesn’t beat Facebook."

60,000 phones with the Android operating system are being shipped each day

"We’re in Barcelona keeping an eye on Eric Schmidt’s Mobile World Congress keynote, where the Google CEO just disclosed an interesting fact: Google and their hardware partners are now shipping 60,000 Android handsets each day.
Whether “shipped” here means “sold to end users” or “ordered by retailers” is unclear – but regardless, it’s quite the feat either way.
If that’s a true average rate and it holds true for the next year, that works out to about 5.4 million handsets per quarter, or 21.9 million per year. Not only that, but the rate seems to be growing fairly rapidly; according to Schmidt, the rate has nearly doubled over the last quarter.
Solely as a point of reference for the curious: Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones last quarter."

The long tail of video sites in the US account for 52% of all time spent watching video

"According to comScore’s 2009 U.S. Digital Year in Review, more than half of all time spent watching videos on the Web (52 percent) last year was on Long Tail video sites beyond the top 25. What you see is a real barbell distribution, with Youtube on one end and the Long Tail sites on the other. Total video views more than doubled between December, 2008 and December, 2009, from 14 billion to 33 billion streams. So there is hope yet for niche video producers.
The Nos. 2 through 25 sites account for the remaining 22 percent of video minutes. This group includes No. 2 video site Hulu, which just hit 1 billion monthly video streams in December, and fast-rising Netflix (no. 19). Hulu’s 1 billion streams accounted for 5.8 billion minutes of viewing time, up 140 percent from a year before."

An average American household spends nearly $1,000 a year on subscriptions for entertainment and communications

"It used to be that a basic $25-a-month phone bill was your main telecommunications expense. But by 2004, the average American spent $770.95 annually on services like cable television, Internet connectivity and video games, according to data from the Census Bureau. By 2008, that number rose to $903, outstripping inflation. By the end of this year, it is expected to have grown to $997.07. Add another $1,000 or more for cellphone service and the average family is spending as much on entertainment over devices as they are on dining out or buying gasoline."

US teens text ten times an hour

"Nielsen analyzes more than 40,000 mobile bills every month to determine what consumers actually are spending their money on. The results are staggering: American teenagers are using 3,146 messages a month, which translates into more than 10 messages every hour of the month that they are not sleeping or in school. Even the under 12 segment are sending 1,146 messages per month, which is almost four text messages per waking hour that they are not at school.
While the 13-17 year old age bracket is already highly saturated, the last holiday season was good to the under 12 segment when it came to text messaging. A full 8 percent increase in SMS usage was measured combined with a near doubling in text message volume for that segment in the following quarter (Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa are late in December, so usage increases will be recorded in Q1)."

"Touch screen devices now account for more than half of all smartphone sales around the world.
Market analyst Canalys reported that 55 per cent of the 54.5 million smartphones sold in the fourth quarter of 2009 were touch-enabled – the first time ever that the figure has topped 50 per cent.
A total of 166 million smartphones were shipped worldwide last year, including 75 million touch screen handsets, or 45 per cent.
The widening of the iPhone's network availability helped Apple to top spot in the manufacturers' stakes, with global iPhone sales of 25.1 million units.

There were more tweets per day in January 2010 than in the whole of September 2008

"According to our research, Twitter is as of December processing more than one billion tweets per month. January passed 1.2 billion, averaging almost 40 million tweets per day. This is significantly more than Twitter was processing just a few months ago.
[...]
Some interesting observations:
December 2009 was the first month Twitter processed more than one billion tweets (with 1.036 billion tweets).
January 2010 had 16 times as many tweets as January 2009.
The activity on Twitter has doubled since August 2009.
January 2010 saw more tweets per day (39.5 million) than the whole of September 2008."
Source: Pingdom, 10th February 2010
Methodology:
"To be able to calculate the number of tweets per month, we tracked down a tweet from the first couple of minutes of each month. Using the sequence numbers of these tweets, we could then calculate the number of tweets for each month. Since finding old tweets is more or less impossible with Twitter’s own search engine, we used Google, then verified the tweet time stamp by looking at the tweet itself."

A census of files available via BitTorrent

"File types
46% movies and shows (non-pornographic)
14% games and software
14% pornography
10% music
1% books and guides
1% images
14% could not classify"

99% of material infringed copyright:
"Overall, we classified ten of the 1021 files, or approximately 1%, as likely non-infringing, This result should be interpreted with caution, as we may have missed some non-infringing files, and our sample is of files available, not files actually downloaded. Still, the result suggests strongly that copyright infringement is widespread among BitTorrent users."
