China had over 500 mln mobile internet users at the end of 2013, up 80.09 mln from the end of 2012. The percentage of internet users accessing the internet through a mobile handset increased to 81.0% during the period, up from 74.5% at the end of 2012. Among 2013 internet users, 69.7% used desktop computers to access the internet, down 0.8 percentage points from the end of 2012. 44.1% of internet users accessed the internet through laptop computers, down 1.8 percentage points from 2012.
Rural residents accounted for 28.6% of China's internet users during the year, or 177 mln people, an increase of approximately 21.01 mln users from the end of 2012. China's village-level internet penetration rate was 27.5% in 2013. The internet penetration rate in Chinese towns was 62.0%.
The percentage of internet users between the ages of 20 and 29 was 31.2%, up 0.9 percentage points from 2012. The percentage of internet users with monthly incomes between RMB 2,001 and RMB 3,000 was 17.8%. The percentage of internet users with monthly incomes between RMB 3,001 and RMB 5,000 was 15.8%. The percentage of internet users with monthly incomes of RMB 500 or less was 20.8%."
