Update - Visible Measures begs to differ...
I don't see that putting 'Kony' in the list or combining the views on all of the 'Will It Blend' videos is very helpful though...

American teens, social media & privacy

"Teens are sharing more information about themselves on social media sites than they have in the past, but they are also taking a variety of technical and non-technical steps to manage the privacy of that information. Despite taking these privacy-protective actions, teen social media users do not express a high level of concern about third-parties (such as businesses or advertisers) accessing their data; just 9% say they are “very” concerned.
Key findings include:
Teens are sharing more information about themselves on their social media profiles than they did when we last surveyed in 2006:
91% post a photo of themselves, up from 79% in 2006.
71% post their school name, up from 49%.
71% post the city or town where they live, up from 61%.
53% post their email address, up from 29%.
20% post their cell phone number, up from 2%."

Online ad spend rose 11.5% across Europe in 2012

"The AdEx Benchmark research revealed that online was the best performer in the advertising market with an overall growth of 11.5% in 2012. Europe continues its strong growth curve in both early adopter and emerging markets. Diversity of online advertising was a strong contributor to ongoing European growth in spite of continuing macroeconomic volatility.
Kimon Zorbas, CEO of IAB Europe, said that the trajectory was positive. “With a 15.3% growth in 2011 and continuing strong growth of 11.5% in 2012, our sector is bucking the trend in Europe. Display advertising has continued its renaissance, driven both by the recognition of online display as a branding medium and the explosion of the big data economy. Big data relies on the rich metrics delivered through the online medium.”
Continued strong migration of ad spends online, which followed media usage patterns, underpinned the overall strong growth. Demand for online video advertising increasingly acted as a major draw for brand advertisers growing by 50.6% in 2012, to nearly €661.9M. This is the first time in Europe that online video has grabbed double-digit display market share, jumping to 12.9%.
Mobile advertising also continued its surge, growing 78.3% to nearly €392M in total value. Mobile advertising now accounts for 5% of all online display spends in Europe. The IAB Europe AdEx Benchmark study splits the online ad market into 3 top-level segments: Display, Classifieds and Directories and, Paid-for-Search. Growth in these online advertising formats has been underpinned by shifting uses of devices and changing consumption patterns.
In 2012, the Display Ad market experienced a like-for-like growth of 9.1%, with a total value of €7.8bn. Growth was mainly driven by mobile and online video. More reliable audience metrics, better campaign measurements, improved automation and simplification of purchasing online advertising space developed by industry, increased confidence amongst marketers in the online ad medium.
The 2012 market value of Classifieds and Directories was €4.5bn and was underpinned by strong redistribution of spends on classified from print to online. Continued consolidation in the sector enhanced the scale of classifieds sites, making them more attractive for advertisers. The strong legacy position of Classifieds and Directories in Scandinavia also continued to boost the European market. Outstanding performances were noted in Denmark - up 20% - and Sweden - up 23.9%.
Paid-For-Search experienced the strongest like-for-like growth of 15.5% - and had a market value of €11.9bn. Dynamic results from Russia, which grew a whopping 44.9% was an important influencing factor. However, even some of the largest and most mature Search markets in Europe, such as Germany and the UK continued to grow, helped by larger volumes of Search ads.  Increased ad spends from small advertisers and mobile search using smartphones and tablets were a significant contributor to this shift.
[...]
The top 10 list remained the same, with the exception of Russia moving from 5th to 4th place, replacing Italy, which dropped down a place to 5th. Top Individual market growth was registered by Russia 34%, followed by Turkey with 30.4%.
Top 10 Rankings
UK – €6.6bn
DE – €4.6bn
France – €2.8bn
Russia – €1.5bn
Italy – €1.4bn
NL – €1.2bn
ES – €0.9bn
Sweden – €0.8bn
Norway – €0.6bn
Denmark – €0.6bn"

Google processes 100 billion searches a month

"Supposedly, there is nothing new under the sun.
But there are nearly 500 million new things per day being asked of Google that the search engine has never seen before.
"Every single day 15 percent of the questions people ask of Google are questions we've never seen before," John Wiley, lead designer for Google Search told Bloomberg TV's Jon Erlichman.
Part of the reason is that the Internet is growing so fast, it's hard even for Google to get its arms around it:
Google says it has found 30 trillion "unique addresses" on the Web, meaning websites, web apps and other stuff connected to the Internet.
Every day, Google crawls 20 billion websites per day.
Google processes 100 billion searches each month.
At 100 billion searches for month, that's just over 3.3 billion per day, which means more than 495 million per day are for things Google has never seen before."

Source:  Special Apple page retrieved 16th May 2013

"Apple® today announced that customers have downloaded over 50 billion apps* from the revolutionary App Store℠. Customers are downloading more than 800 apps per second at a rate of over two billion apps per month on the App Store. The 50 billionth app was Say the Same Thing by Space Inch, LLC, which was downloaded by Brandon Ashmore from Mentor, Ohio who received a $10,000 App Store Gift Card to commemorate this historic milestone.
“Apple would like to thank our incredible customers and developers for topping 50 billion apps downloaded,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years.”
The App Store opened in July 2008 with 500 apps. Since its introduction, Apple’s incredible developer community has created an app for doing almost everything imaginable on an iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch®."

On a typical week night Netflix accounts for almost a third of all US household internet traffic

"On a normal weeknight, Netflix accounts for almost a third of all Internet traffic entering North American homes. That’s more than YouTube, Hulu, Amazon.com, HBO Go, iTunes, and BitTorrent combined. Traffic to Netflix usually peaks at around 10 p.m. in each time zone, at which point a chart of Internet consumption looks like a python that swallowed a cow. By midnight Pacific time, streaming volume falls off dramatically."

Facebook Home users spend 25% more time on Facebook

"Despite some bad reviews, it appears that people are, in fact, using it. In the first month, about one million people downloaded Home, Ondrejka said, which lines up with what the Home team expected (he would not, however, say how many of those people are still actively using Home).
The app also seems to be having the desired effect on user activity. Ondrejka said that Home users are spending 25 percent more time on Facebook, and are interacting with other users 25 percent more as well. He added that there has also been a 7 percent increase in chat usage and a 10 percent increase in the amount of messages that Home users send, on average. And over 10,000 people were so desperate to get Home on their unsupported Android smartphones that they installed a hacked version, Mosseri said."
Note - I'm assuming that this means 25% more time than before, rather than 25% more time than the average

79% of smartphone owners are 'smartphone shoppers'

"Now that consumers have product details, price comparisons and reviews available instantly at their fingertips, shoppers complement what they’re seeing on store shelves with what they can find on the web. This behavior isn’t just limited to high consideration purchases like appliances and electronics. In every industry we looked at, including household items, apparel, and pet care, more than 70% of smartphone shoppers use their phones in store to help with shopping. In fact, two-thirds of baby product shoppers compare prices on their phones in-store.
So what are shoppers using their smartphones for in stores? The research showed that phones were primarily used for:
Price comparison (53%)
Finding offers and promotions (39%)
Finding locations of other stores (36%)
Finding hours (35%)"

There is a correlation between page views on Wikipedia and stock market performance

"A flood of views to a company's Wikipedia page may be a sign that their stock price is about to plummet.
That's the implication of a study published on 8 May in Scientific Reports, which looked at Wikipedia page view data from 2007 to 2012 and correlated it with changes in the stock market price for companies listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
An uptick in the number of Wikipedia page views, as compared with the average weekly views, was followed by a fall in a company's share price.
The research suggests that Wikipedia pages, which can be edited by anyone, are part of the information-gathering process for financial transactions -- potentially useful knowledge for people wanting to play the system.
"We were really intrigued by the idea that data from usage of Internet information resources such as Wikipedia might help us understand how traders gather information before making these decisions," lead author Suzy Moat, Senior Research Fellow at Warwick Business School, told Wired.co.uk.
"The connection we find between views of Wikipedia pages and stock market moves suggests this may indeed be the case. This suggests that data on people's usage of online information services, such as Wikipedia or Google may be used to anticipate decisions they might later take in the real world."
Previous research has shown that the volume of financially-related searches on Google and also the "mood" of tweets on Twitter can be linked to changes in the stock market. Big data approaches to real world trends have also shown links between web searches and flu infections."

Shazam generates $300 million in music sales a year

"So it turns out that Shazam is generating a ton of music sales, according to stats just shared by the company.  That is, $300 million worth of digital download sales a year, generated immediately after song recognitions.  And those are just the sales that can be directly tracked.
This is arguably one of the most impulse-perfect moments for fans, and it's working.  The figure [was] presented Thursday by Shazam executive vice president David Jones during a detailed presentation at NARM.
Jones confirmed to Digital Music News that this is an annual, gross figure on digital downloads only, with Shazam's referral cut amounting to something substantial.  "We get a single-digit percentage revenue share on that," Jones relayed.  "Thankfully with that number, it adds up to a revenue stream that helps pay the bills.""

Vines made by brands are shared four times more often than other videos made by brands

"Marketers love them some Twitter Vines—and for good reason, it turns out. Unruly Media's research reveals that branded Vines are shared four times as often as branded Internet videos. What's more, Unruly found that five Vines are shared every second on Twitter—so the non-advertising world apparently digs the six-second videos, too.
The tech company also discovered that 4 percent of the top 100 shared Vines were made by brands. Comparatively, according to the New York-based firm, only 1 percent of Top 100 viral online videos were the work of brands."

45% of Groupon's sales come from mobile devices

"Overall revenues grew by 8 per cent to $601m in the first quarter, ahead of the $589m that Wall Street had been expecting, while income from operations fell 47 per cent to $21m. Before compensation costs, the company reported net income per share of 3 cents, in line with forecasts.
Mr Lefkofsky pointed to growth in local revenues from the fourth quarter of last year, as well as margin improvement, as encouraging signs for the company’s future. Groupon also said that 45 per cent of its transactions came from mobile devices, confirming the growing importance of mobile in its business mix."

85% of Tweets originate with just 15% of users

"Twitter is eliminating distance and helping people stay in touch with distant friends and acquaintances, suggests a study of the social network.
The study analysed 1.5 billion tweets sent by 70 million users in one month to work out where people were.
On average, it found, people who mentioned or retweeted each other's messages were 750 miles apart.
The study also revealed that people tweeting each other the most tended to be the furthest apart.
The study, by Kalev Leetaru and colleagues at the University of Illinois, did not look at the textual content of tweets but attempted to work out where 70 million users of the service were located last October and November when they sent them.
Then Mr Leetaru and his co-researchers plotted who was communicating with whom to get a sense of the geographic distances dividing people who regularly chat via the microblogging service.
The study, published in the online journal First Monday, found that, on a typical day, the average tweet is just nine words long and 85% of those messages originate with just 15% of users."
Note - This only looked at a sample of Twitter users, and also there are a lot of bots that tweet automatically e.g. City Guides (although no one user is allowed to tweet more than 2,000 times a day)

Social traffic & navigation app Waze has 45 million users

"For those who don’t know, Waze is a social traffic and navigation app that is based on a large community of tens of millions of drivers around the world sharing real-time road info and more to everyone else’s benefit.
When the Apple rumors first started surfacing back in January, Waze had around 36 million users and was on track to double that number this year.
The company is said to have roughly 45 million users today, up from 40 million back in February.
In 2012, drivers shared 90 million reports as they drove 6 billion miles (9.66 billion kilometres). Also last year, 65,000 map editors made a total of 500 million map edits and updated Waze’s map to reflect 1.7 million changes on the ground.
All this community-driven editing took place in 110 countries.
Waze has raised $67 million in venture capital to date, from investors like Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Li-Ka Shing, Blue Run Ventures, Magma Venture Partners and Vertex Venture Capital."

There were 1.4 million tweets mentioning Sir Alex Ferguson within an hour of his retirement

"If you want an idea of the reverence with which Sir Alex Ferguson is held, Twitter has an easy guideline: more than Margaret Thatcher, but less – so far – than the new Pope.
That's the conclusion that emerges from the number of tweets surrounding the three events – the death of Lady Thatcher, the announcement of the new pope, and this morning's announcement by Manchester United's press office Twitter account (at the newsdesk-friendly hour of 9.17am).
According to data collected by Twitter, the hour after Thatcher's death saw a million tweets in the following four hours.
Sir Alex broke that easily, as the much-expected news of his retirement from the manager's job had more than 1.4m mentions on Twitter within the first hour, and the original story was retweeted and "favourited" more than 18,000 times, according to official Twitter figures.
But the announcement of the choice of Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the new pope on 13 March garnered substantially more mentions, 7m, demonstrating that while football may be a religion for many, it still has a little way to catch up with the officially recognised ones, at least on social media."

Starbucks has 4 million mobile app users, and generates 4 million mobile payments a week

"Coffee company Starbucks continues to see significant traction in its mobile efforts--the company said more than 10 million people are "active" users of the company's mobile apps, and that the company now counts close to 4 million mobile payment transactions per week (up from 2 million near the end of last year and 3 million a month ago). This, the company said, accounts for roughly 10 percent of the company's total "U.S. tender.""

VOIP app Viber has 200 million users

"Mobile-first messaging and communications platform Viber has landed on the desktop.
Originally available only on smartphone platforms like Android, iOS, and others, Viber has added a desktop client that seamlessly interoperates with its mobile apps and now enables video calling for the first time.
The result is a combination of just about every kind of communication you could wish for in a single client: mobile text-like messaging, audio, and video. Which means that not only is Viber competing with mobile messaging platforms like the massive WhatsApp, it’s also competing with existing VOIP giant Skype.
And it’s got a few advantages on both sides.
With its new desktop client, Viber can seamlessly transfer calls between mobile and laptop, handy if you need to get out of the office in the middle of a call. It seamlessly syncs contacts between devices, silently and continuously, and it shows your received and sent messages on all your Viber-equipped devices.
[...]
The VOIP communications company with its roots in mobile announced today that it has hit the 200 million user mark — startlingly fast growth for the young company which had 140 million users just in December. That’s perhaps not surprising, as the company is growing at mobile speed — it was the ninth most-downloaded app on Google Play as of March, 2013."

When Netflix enters a territory Bittorrent traffic falls as the Netflix traffic grows

"What are you doing to combat piracy?
One of the things is we get ISPs to publicise their connection speeds – and when we launch in a territory the Bittorrent traffic drops as the Netflix traffic grows. So I think people do want a great experience and they want access – people are mostly honest. The best way to combat piracy isn’t legislatively or criminally but by giving good options. One of the side effects of growth of content is an expectation to have access to it. You can’t use the internet as a marketing vehicle and then not as a delivery vehicle."

Online video consumption in India has doubled in the last two years

"comScore, Inc, a leader in measuring the digital world, today released the latest comScore Video Metrix report showing that total online video consumption has doubled in the past two years to 3.7 billion videos per month. The total online video audience in India has grown 74 percent to 54 million viewers, with the average viewer watching 18 percent more videos and spending 28 percent more time viewing."

Facebook app install ads have driven 25 million installs

"Facebook  app install ads were the star of Facebook’s earnings call today. Sheryl Sandberg said 3800 developers used the ads to drive over 25 million installs. 40% of the top 100 iOS and Android app developers bought these ads in the last week of Q1 alone. 30% of Facebook's ad revenue comes from mobile ads

"Almost one-third of Facebook’s advertising revenue is now coming from mobile platforms, according to the company’s latest earnings release. About $375 million of Facebook’s $1.25 billion in advertising revenue came from products like the company’s new mobile app install ads.
That’s up from last quarter, when Facebook said it made 23 percent, or $305.9 million, from mobile ads. So this is a nice 22.5 percent quarter-over-quarter increase in mobile advertising revenue."
